S 550 Silver Handle Button Hook 1914
A button hook hails from the age of elegance rather than practicality, when women wore button up boots, gloves etc. A buttonhook is a tool used to facilitate the closing of buttoned shoes, gloves or other clothing. It consists of a hook fixed to a handle which may be simple or decorative as part of a dresser set or chatelaine. Sometimes they were given away as promotions with product advertising on the handle. To use, the hook end is inserted through the buttonhole to capture the button by the shank and draw it through the opening. These are now mainly collector items, but they can still be used for pulling up the zips on modern shoes and can also be helpful to people suffering from arthritis in the fingers or hands.
This button hook was made in the same year World War l started and has a sterling silver handle and a steel shank. The shank is in remarkably good condition, suggesting this item was only used indoors and has been well looked after and most probably used indoors as a gloove hook.
There is a full British hall mark from the Birmingham assay office with the mark for sterling silver, the date letter for 1914 and the maker mark for Henry Williamson Ltd. The hallmarks are clear and not rubbed.
The button hook measures 165 mm long and weighs in at 26.5 gram.
This is a used item that is over 100 years in age and id in very good condition. The item has either been used very little or used with great care and is ready to join a collection. The silver handle would be greatly improved with a gentle buffing to bringout the lustre of old silver.
