S 367 Sterling Silver Sovereign Case 1896
This is an item from yesteryear that today has become a sort after collectable.
As the name suggests it was used to hold gold sovereigns and half sovereigns when they were legal tender in Britain.
Measuring 30 mm in diameter and around 14 mm wide the sovereign case weighs in at 15.5 gram.
There is a full British hallmark from the Birmingham assay office with the mark for sterling silver, a date letter for 1896 and a maker mark that we cannot read because it is not clearly formed.
The case has an attractive chased pattern and a plain circular part for an inscribed letter or monogram. It is opened by pressing down on the knob at the top. Both the knob and the sprung hinge are firm and strong even though there are some marks to show the item has been used. There are some dings to the case but they are only really visible from the inside since the pattern masks the dings on the outside. There is still some old silver polish on the inside edge of the case consistent with an item that has been well looked after over the years.
This is a used, but well looked after and a truely collectable piece that is in excellent condition.
