S 350 Swedish Silver Thimble 1890
SKU : S 350
These short metal caps have protected needlewomen’s fingers since Roman times, when thimbles were cast in bronze. Steel thimbles were common in the 1700’s and 1800’s, and many were made of silver, although few are hallmarked. Thimbles have been produced in a variety of different materials including porcelain, enamel, ivory, bone, hardwood, mother of pearl, glass and bakelite.
This silver thimble measures around 18 mm in diameter at the base and stands 20 mm high and weighs 3.5 gram.
There are hallmarks in the thimble that we believe are Swedish.
The body of the thimble has been left plain with the usual cross-hatched top. The lack of holes and general condition suggests this thimble has never been little used for sewing and darning but most probably displayed as an ornament.
Thimbles are a much sort after item for the avid collector, and this thimble is ready to start or join an existing collection.
